A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
