At least 35,000 applicants could be affected, cautions the American embassy

A substantial information leak in the Somali digital visa application system may have exposed sensitive details associated with many thousands of travelers, comprising United States passport holders, the United States diplomatic mission in Mogadishu has cautioned.

It said gathered credible reports that "unknown cyber attackers" compromised the Somali government's e-visa platform, likely endangering information belonging to roughly 35,000 people.

The exposed records being shared on the internet contain full names, photographs, birth dates, marital status, place of residence and email information, according to a US embassy statement released on Thursday.

"This security incident is ongoing and might reveal any sensitive details provided to the application portal," the UK has additionally cautioned visitors.

"Assess the potential threats before applying for an electronic visa necessary for travel to the Somali nation."

Administrative Action

Somali authorities have not commented about the security compromise. But authorities has shifted visa processing from the previous platform the original e-visa website to the updated platform, without providing a public clarification.

"Although American diplomatic mission in Somalia is unable to confirm whether applicant details is part of the breach, individuals who have applied for a Somali e-visa might be compromised," the American announcement declared.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process mandates every visitor, comprising individuals from the autonomous region of Somaliland and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to seek travel visas through digital means.

Critics say visitors have encountered supplementary costs in specific areas, totaling double charges.

Political Context

The self-declared republic, that announced sovereignty in 1991, administers its affairs with its own institutions but has not been internationally recognised. The Federal Government asserts that this territory still constitutes its jurisdictional area.

The reported compromise exacerbates long-running tensions concerning Mogadishu and northern authorities regarding authority over national air territory. Even though federal authorities restored full control of territorial skies in 2017, Somaliland continues to contest the arrangement.

Recent Escalation

The disagreement escalated further this week after Somaliland's President the regional leader stated the northern territory would reject the federal e-visa system and instructed that aviation companies must obtain authorization from Somaliland officials prior to accessing the region's aviation space.

However major airlines have chosen not to process individuals lacking Mogadishu's electronic permit.

On Saturday, the northern region's top diplomat Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reaffirmed that "anyone travelling to Somaliland can acquire entry permission on arrival", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process posed risks and warning that "people's data can fall into radical elements" due to using it.

Passenger Complications

The stand-off has caused numerous passengers destined for Hargeisa unable to board flights due to rejection at check-in for lacking Mogadishu's digital permit.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the aviation minister, has told media outlets that the instructions - originally publicized in recent months - became operational on November 10th.

He said companies that ignore would be instructed to change course, and asserted several aircraft had already been rerouted.

Jurisdictional Battle

Footage distributed by the northern region's air transport department reportedly displays local air-traffic controllers issuing instructions to international pilots - a move hailed internally as an assertion of Somaliland's autonomy.

Nevertheless the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority maintains it possesses complete jurisdictional power over the federal aviation control area (aviation control zone), that includes the whole nation's airspace. Authorities have instructed every plane to ignore any instructions issued by sources besides federal authorities.

Officials cautioned that not adhering to federal and global flight regulations could pose aviation dangers and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
