A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
