Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
