The national government announced it would offer reduced relief to countless food stamp beneficiaries as the protracted federal closure neared a unprecedented period.
Benefit Cut Details
Amid increasing uncertainty for the around 42 million Americans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the USDA indicated it would use emergency resources to maintain payments, though at merely 50% of the usual amount participants typically get.
Funding for the program officially ran out on recently due to the federal closure, now in its 34th day with no clear signal of resolution.
Legal Developments
The announcement came in a legal document after previous rejections to issue emergency funding on purported legal grounds. A court had decided the administration could not deny program funds as a result of the shutdown.
Subsequent to the court order, the administration announced it would be "pleased" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Implementation Hurdles
Officials noted that money could start flowing by Wednesday, but stressed the need for further direction from the courts on how to properly reallocate funds for SNAP benefits.
- Some authorities have stated it will take time or even weeks to provide funds to needy families.
- Long queues have been documented at food banks throughout the nation.
- In several regions, stadium parking lots were converted into distribution sites.
State Emergency Measures
Several states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared states of emergency to allocate short-term resources for benefits. However, these sums were anticipated to be a limited percentage of the typical national funding.
The government spending for SNAP total approximately $8 billion per month across the United States.
